Growing up in the Litchfield Hills of Connecticut, my family and I were very close to the Farmington River trail. This is a biking/ walking trail that runs right along the Farmington River between Collinsville and Unionville, CT and beyond.  And because we lived so close, my father would take my sister and I out there for bike rides and we always had a good time. The one thing I remember, though, is that we were always safe because we always had bikes that were in good condition and we always wore helmets. I imagine that if a serious injury had occurred because of a lack of attention to safety precautions, I would remember those sunny afternoons by the river quite differently.

Summer being the season of riding bikes and having fun outdoors, we want to take this opportunity to remind you to be safe this year. Here is a video from the Insurance Information Institute giving you some bicycle safety tips.

It’s been a scorcher of a week and that means that the sun has been pretty powerful. So for those of us who love to spend a lot of time outdoors, it’s time to be more careful with our skin’s sun exposure. Here are some tips from the sun skincare experts at Coppertone:

  • Apply sunscreen before you are exposed to the sun.
  • Don’t skimp on application; use your sunscreen liberally and apply it evenly to ensure coverage.
  • Be sure not to overlook spots like your ears, neck, shoulders and the back of your neck.
  • SPF tells you the level of protection a sunscreen provides from sunburn. The higher the SPF, the greater the protection. We recommend using a sunscreen with SPF 15 or higher whenever you’ll be outdoors.
  • Don’t be afraid to reapply!

For more helpul tips, visit the Coppertone website!

And just like your skin needs protection from the sun, your car, your home and your business need protection from life. Hillshire Farm Commercial-Talking Grill on Youtube

This summer, to keep your grilling meats from talking back to you, here are some BBQ safety tips from the USDA:

  • Keep everything clean: use clean utensils and platters.
  • Cook thoroughly: cook food to a safe minimum internal temperature to destroy harmful bacteria…Beef, veal and lamb steaks, roasts and chops can be cooked to 145°F. Hamburgers made of ground beef should reach 160°F. All cuts of pork should reach 160°F. All poultry should reach a minimum of 165°F. NEVER partially grill meat or poultry and finish grilling later.
  • When reheating fully-cooked meats like hot dogs, grill to 165°F or until steaming hot.
  • Keep hot food hot: after cooking meat and poultry on the grill, keep it hot until served—at 140°F or warmer.
  • Use clean platters to serve cooked foods…In hot weather (above 90°F), food should never sit out for more than 1 hour.

Have fun this summer, but be safe with your food. It’s no fun to be in the hospital when the weather is so nice.

Hurricane Season 2010 and the National Flood Insurance Program

In the midst of hurricane season 2010, it’s a wonder that the National Flood Insurance Program is currently missing in action (it has been expired since May 31, 2010). With NOAA predictions ranging from 8 – 14 hurricanes this season, this situation is not ideal. Since consumers cannot change, renew or buy new coverage while the House of Representatives is still out on the renewal of the Program, in the event of a flood, many Americans that are without proper coverage, or any coverage at all, would be facing serious damages.

The urgency of the National Flood Insurance Program’s renewal needs to be recognized so that people can continue and/or begin to get the coverage that they need. Additionally, the period for which the Program is active, before the next renewal crosses the ballots, should ideally be extended. If you think your home or business is at risk of flooding, or are unsure about your current Flood Insurance Policy, please contact Encharter insurance with any questions you may have.

At Encharter Insurance we want you to be protected and feel confident about the coverage that you have. While new flood insurance policies cannot be purchased, and neither adjustments nor renewals made on pre-existing policies, we look forward to answering any questions you may have. If the status of the National Flood Insurance Program directly affects you, continue to follow the updates here.
