“I scream, You scream, We all scream for Ice Cream!” I love me some good, homemade ice cream and I am pretty certain that I am not the only one. So here’s to all the ice cream lovers out there and treat yourself with this great recipe, courtesy of FoodNetwork.com and star chef, Alton Brown:

Serious Vanilla Ice Cream

Prep Time: 10 hrs

Cook Time: 1 hr

Ingredients:

2 cups half-and-half

1 cup whipping cream

1 cup minus 2 tablespoons sugar

2 tablespoons peach preserves (not jelly)

1 vanilla bean, split and scraped

Directions:

Combine all ingredients (including the bean hull and its pulp) in a large saucepan and place over medium heat. Attach a frying or candy thermometer to inside of pan. (See note below.) Stirring occasionally, bring the mixture to 170 degrees F. Remove from heat and allow to cool slightly. Remove the hull of the vanilla bean, pour mixture into lidded container and refrigerate mixture overnight to mellow flavors and texture.

Freeze mixture in ice cream freezer according to unit’s instructions. The mixture will not freeze hard in the machine. Once the volume has increased by 1/2 to 3/4 times, and reached a soft serve consistency, spoon the mixture back into a lidded container and harden in the freezer at least 1 hour before serving.

NOTE: If you do not have a thermometer, bring the mixture just barely to a simmer. As soon as you see a bubble hit the surface, remove it from the heat. Do not let it boil.

While you’re enjoying your now freshly-made, delicious ice cream, think about all the other great stuff summer can bring, like boats, motorcycles, camping in your RV or trailer camper. Wouldn’t it be great if you could do all you could to keep those things looking good and working well for as long as possible to keep summer alive?

We would love to talk to you about making your summer last a long time by making your summer toys last a long time too!

Does Your CT Home Insurance Have Wind Damage Coverage?

CT Homeowners InsuranceLiving in Connecticut, I sometimes forget just how fortunate I am to be living in the Northeast. Everyday reports are coming in about the devastation in the Mid to Southwestern United States from the tornadoes and thunderstorms in those regions. Entire livelihoods, properties and lives have been taken by these storms. Our thoughts and prayers are certainly with the victims today.

Although the threat of such devastating storms is not as prevalent here in Connecticut, the potential for wind damage is present. Did you know that some CT Homeowners Insurance policies have coverage for wind damage? Not all insurance policies or carriers have this particular type of coverage, but some do. You need to talk to your local CT Insurance provider to learn more about your options.

Having the right kind of coverage can help you piece together your life after a devastating loss. Don’t miss an opportunity to protect yourself and your property with the appropriate coverage.

CT Car Insurance: Saving You Money, Not Like Gas Prices

Over the last couple of months, we have been keeping an eye on the rising gas prices. The price per gallon keeps creeping up to the high we saw in the summer of 2008 ($4.38 per gallon in Connecticut according to gasbuddy.com). We all want to see the current prices dip, if only to save a few bucks for each fill-up.

If gas prices don’t level off, the best way to beat the pump is to have a car that is fuel efficient. Having an automobile with high MPG (Miles Per Gallon) can cut the amount of times you head to the gas station and save you a significant amount of money on gas.

Unfortunately, an efficient car equates to a more expensive car. Moreover, the cars are usually miniscule, which makes it tougher for taller people and families. To help reverse this stigma of fuel efficient cars, Yahoo Autos released a list of cars that are fuel efficient, relatively inexpensive, and can fit more than just one bag of groceries in the trunk.

If you’re in the market for a new car, looking into fuel efficiency is becoming increasingly important. Coupling your purchase with excellent Connecticut auto insurance can have you be on your way to a less expensive way of commuting.

As a friendly tip, Philip Reed from Edmunds.com suggests, “It’s costly to change cars. Don’t do it just because of gas prices… if you’re going to trade in your vehicle anyway, then by all means, look for one that gets good mileage.” Along with fees and taxes, you have to talk with your Connecticut car insurance provider to discuss the new car and switching license plates. But enjoy shopping for a new car; it should be fun and not all about taxes and CT insurance.

How CT Car Insurance Company Helps Stop Distracted Driving

Connecticut Car Insurance

Picture this: you’re driving down the interstate when you hear your phone beep.  It’s telling you that you have a new email and you think, “Nope, it can wait—But what if it’s work?—What if it’s important?—Can it really wait?—I’ll just r

ead it real quick and I’ll respond when I’m stopped.”  So you pick up the phone, just to read the email quickly, and you take your eyes off the road for just a second and the next thing you know, that curve seemed to have from out of nowhere and your car is engine-first in a ditch. Or worse yet, you hit another car stopped in traffic.

Distracted driving presents a danger, not only to yourself, but also to the passengers in your car and the other drivers around you on the road.  Don’t text and drive or email and drive and talk and drive…better yet, just turn the phone when you get in the car.  You won’t get any message so important during your short drive that would be worth your life or the life of others on the road.

Good news? You can actually save money on iZup as a Plymouth Rock Assurance Corporation customer. What’s iZup, you ask? iZup (pronounced “eyes up”) is a purchased app that you download onto your phone and it hold incoming and outgoing calls, texts and emails while you’re driving.  As a PRAC client, you can receive a discount on this service with PRAC’s Savings Pass Program.

More good news? Your local Encharter Insurance independent agent can tell you more about PRAC and their CT Car Insurance products and the other CT

auto insurance carriers that we represent.  Getting the right coverage AND saving money on technology that saves your life sounds like a good deal to me! Talk to your local CT insurance provider today!

Best Commuter Cities Good for CT Car Insurance

Every time I have to drive through Hartford, I try to make sure I avoid rush hour. Rush hour in any city is not something to look forward to, but I never liked winding through Hartford and navigating left lane exits.

Surprisingly, Hartford is one of the best cities in the U.S. for commuters. According to MSN, Hartford ranks as the tenth best city to commute to, taking into account commute time, cost of gas, and delays. The 45 parking garages and street parking helped us edge out Sacramento, California for the last spot

Our neighbors to the east, Providence, also made the top ten, but no one was surprised that Boston and New York City got left out.

Even though we do encounter traffic, I guess it could be worse. Delays are usually caused by accidents or massive congestions, so it appears Connecticut drivers are keeping their Connecticut auto insurance low by driving safely to and from the city.

Another way people might be keeping their Connecticut car insurance bill down is either working from home or in the suburbs. This might be why Hartford is a good commuter city, because many people throughout the U.S. are working from home, and have to primarily worry about Connecticut homeowners insurance instead of the risk of commuting and car insurance.

How do you feel the commute is? Is Hartford worthy of being in the top 10?

Spending time outdoors in the summertime is always fun.  There are so many activities you can do: play Frisbee, play any game that involves a ball, go bike riding, take a long drive, got to the beach, fall asleep in a hammock….or go for a ride on your ATV. The possibilities seem to be endless.

Before you go off four-wheelin’, don’t forget to check your CT ATV insurance policy. As much fun as ATVs can be, they can also be at risk for damage in accidents. It’s best to be safe by following all the safety regulations for operation and talk to your CT insurance agent about the coverage on ATV insurance.

Where are some of your favorite places to go riding on your ATV in Connecticut?

CT Car Insurance: NOT Outdated Like…Television?

Remember record players, cassettes, black and white televisions, and car phones? It’s funny to look back at all of the now outdated items we used to use on a daily basis. With laptops, smart phones, and iPods, we are able to store massive amounts of data within a very portable device. Seeing someone with a walkman or record player nowadays would surely turn heads.

Yet, I’m sure there are tons of people you know, and even yourself that have 7 items that are no longer necessary. MSN developed a list of things that are now outdated, but everyone still has:

-Television

-Telephone land line

-DVD player

-Physical music selection

-Cable TV

-Desktop computer

-E-mail

I was definitely surprised to see e-mail on there, because it is definitely necessary still. However, the point they were trying to make was texting, Facebook chat, or calling would get a quicker response than an e-mail. I would also argue that I still prefer a TV, sports are hard to find online and it’s easier to watch the games with a group of people around a TV instead of a computer.

Nevertheless, it is interesting to see items that I see every day that are no longer essential. We should be reevaluating what is essential in life anyway. Far too often could I save time and money if I realized how a certain purchase might be so unessential.

For my brother’s first car purchase, he only focused on the essentials. He went without automatic doors and windows, and didn’t bother with many other accessories, saving himself hundreds of dollars. Luckily, he didn’t overlook his Connecticut car insurance, which helped him out during an accident over the winter during some bad weather. With proper CT car insurance and a repairable car, he was able to get over the accident without much out of his wallet and back on the road.

What about you? Do you have any items in your house that you no longer need? Have you or someone you know skipped over some important aspects of CT insurance?

What’s Your Dream Job? How About Beach Testing?

Posted on 9th May 2011 by admin in Connecticut Homeowner's Insurance

To say I’m jealous of Asa Dejus would be a massive understatement. Dejus, a student in Sweden, landed to what many people would call a dream job. She is now a full-time beach tester. Apparently, this is an actual job, and a career path of which I was not aware.

The job description included the following:

“Going on outings, lying on beach chairs, drinking wine in local taverns and other ordinary assignments found in a commercial beach and tourist environment… In certain areas, receiving a full-body massage, testing drinks, snorkeling and book reading may be required.”

Dejus did not reveal her secrets on how to become a beach tester, but living on a constant vacation is definitely one of the best jobs out there. Getting paid to relax makes me wonder what she would do on her personal vacation.

Although I won’t be visiting beaches year round, I still plan on hopping in the car and driving to Cape Cod or other beaches around New England during the summer weekends. I know other beach goers will be planning the same thing.

Being stuck in traffic greatly decreases the overall satisfaction of a beach day and people can get overly aggressive to shave a few minutes on their commute time. An accident quickly escalates the amount of time it takes to get to the beach, but with great Connecticut auto insurance, the overall ordeal can become less of a hassle.

You may want to look into your Connecticut home insurance as well. Because while you’ll be away from your home for longer periods of time during the summer, the chance of a robbery increases. Moreover, if you couple it with your CT car insurance, you can save up to 30%!

So even though we won’t be paid for going to the beach, it is nice to head there every now and then. Enjoy the warm weather and drive safe!

CT Umbrella Insurance: Protection for Liability-Fraught Pool Season

Posted on 6th May 2011 by admin in Connecticut Homeowner's Insurance |Connecticut Umbrella Insurance

The time has finally come. I saw my neighbors open their pool the other day, and even though they are always the first do it, the opening brought a smile to my face. Winter is behind us, even though it feels like yesterday when I was shoveling my driveway that had over a foot of snow on it, or gliding on ice-laden sidewalks that needed more salt.

Now it is time to unpack the bathing suits, shorts, and towels and begin the process of enjoying the warm weather once more. You might wait a bit longer to reopen your pool, but hopefully you’ll have a smooth transition into the new season.

The real test of a pool reopening is how you handled the winter months. Removing large debris and keeping the cover on tight is crucial to minimizing dirty water infiltrating your pool.  However, getting some dirty water inside the pool is unavoidable, but take your time to remove the cover carefully. Moreover, clean the cover before storing it away to make closing the pool during the fall an easy process.

Other tips include a handy checklist from poolandspa.com. Make sure to:

  • Take the supplies (chemicals) out of storage and replace those that have exceeded the expiration date.
  • Remove the cover, and then clean it. Allow it to dry (to prevent mildew) before folding and storing it for the summer.
  • Reinstall or reassemble the pump, filter, and other removed items.
  • Reinstall ladders, diving board, and other deck fittings. If used at closing time, most of the petroleum jelly used to coat exposed metal fittings will have weathered off. Use a dry terry cloth towel to wipe off the remainder if necessary.
  • Remove the plugs and replace return outlet fittings.

As much fun as pools can be, they are also an extra liability and risk. The liability limits on your Connecticut Homeowners Insurance policy might not be enough to cover you in the event of an accident. A CT Umbrella Insurance policy could be really beneficial to you, so be sure to talk to us so that you can get your summer rolling!
