It’s getting to be that time of year again; summer vacations are right around the corner and that means leaving your home and your valuables unattended and at risk for extended periods of time.  The important thing to remember is that you can do your part to protect your property by following these simple steps, as outlined by the award-winning travel blog: The Vacation Gals:

  • Lock your doors and windows: Easy-to-miss windows can be an easy-access entry for a thief.
  • Remove temptation: Close your drapes and move valuables out of the view from your windows.
  • Ensure the garage door closes upon departure.
  • Make the house look occupied: Avoid an overflowing mailbox, pile of newspapers on the driveway and flyers on the door by putting a hold on your newspaper and mail. Have a friend or neighbor pick up any advertising or packages left on your doorstep.
  • Light timer: On the inside of the home, set a few lamps or even the TV on sporadic scheduled timers. The lights will further the appearance of an occupied home.
  • Auto lighting: Also call “outdoor sensory lighting”, this tactic is ideal for every house since the light is triggered only when it detects motion.
  • Security Alarm: Installing a security alarm is no easy feat, but it’s worth the peace of mind. Remember to give the security code to neighbors or house-watchers and ensure they know how to use the keypad while you’re away.
  • Invest in security cameras: Just the sight of a security camera will make a thief think twice before breaking into a house.
  • Car in the driveway: Many security experts recommend leaving a car in the driveway while you travel to offer the appearance that someone is home.
  • Remove the garage opener from the car: If you do leave your car behind, be sure to remove all valuables and (especially) your garage door opener, which could turn into a home key.

Following these tips is a great way to protect yourself against the loss of your personal property. You can also help yourself by having the right coverage on your Connecticut Homeowners Insurance policy.

Having the right CT Insurance can provide you with a great peace of mind while you’re enjoying yourself on “Some beach, Somewhere”.

Bankrupt Athletes & CT Insurance

Whenever I get wind of a blockbuster deal for some sports player, I’m always surprised by the amount of money it is. Alex Rodriguez has a one year salary of $32,000,000! Although he’s the highest paid athlete in the U.S. right now, most players do get paid in the tens of millions of dollars.

Even though they make millions of dollars, the athletes usually spend as much as they earn. Cars, yachts, hefty CT insurance policies, mansions, and vacation homes are common purchases for highly paid athletes.

Unfortunately, after playing for about 10 seasons, stars can quickly squander all of their savings and need to declare bankruptcy. There have even been a few well known athletes to declare bankruptcy. Mike Tyson and Michael Vick both found themselves in the red and needing to find a way to rebound.

With some planning, these people could have avoided their personal financial crisis. A consultant or accountant would have been all they needed.

Most of us don’t need to hire someone to crunch all of our numbers for every purchase we make, but it helps to keep an eye on your expenses (you can save money on your CT car insurance by getting it at the same agency as your CT home insurance) and plan for your future (having a will, planning for retirement).
